July 2010 - Orange Radiology and Ramapo Radiology are now offering Digital Mammography in the Newburgh, Monroe and Suffern locations.
Mammograms play a central role in the early detection of breast cancer because they can detect changes that are too small or subtle to be felt.
Full field digital mammograms are performed much the same way as conventional screen-film mammograms, with images appearing on the technician's screen within minutes and thus reducing the time spent in the breast imaging suite.
Early detection of breast cancer greatly improves the chances for successful treatment. When breast cancer is detected before it has spread to lymph nodes or to other parts of the body, the 5-year survival rate is 100%.
Methods for early detection of breast cancer include breast clinical examinations by a health care professional, and mammography. In most cases, mammography can identify an abnormal breast mass as much as two years before it can be detected by touch.
Why is digital technology better than the older film-based technology?
Your radiologist can manipulate the digital image in a way that can't be done with films. Sharpness, contrast and zoom are features that now allow for clearer viewing on high resolution monitors.
Digital technology greatly reduces the need for re-takes due to over- or under-exposure.
Digital files can be transmitted to other computers and files can be duplicated without loss of quality.
